Candidates Can Establish Themselves Online – Beyond the Website

A campaign website might be the first time a candidate intentionally places their own information online. Your own website does not have to be the only place where a candidate can have an Internet presence. Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn are examples of social networking sites where you can create a page that is all about you and where link your profile to others.

By creating profiles on social media sites, you can network with supporters and help brand yourself. Profiles tend to come up in local search engines as results for specific name searches.

Social networking has hit it big for the presidential race. There are over a million Obama supporters on Facebook, while McCain supporters number just over 150000. On MySpace, where Obama has more than 400,000 friends to around 55,000 for McCain. Odds are, your local campaign won’t hit those sorts of numbers, but the more ‘friends’ you have online means more links and more traffic back to your campaign website – and an additional way to connect to voters!
